Beverley callard returns to the jungle amidst cancer battle
Beverley Callard, the beloved actress synonymous with Coronation Street, is back in the jungle for I’m A Celebrity…South Africa, but her return is shadowed by a recent and deeply personal diagnosis. The veteran soap star, known for her iconic portrayal of Liz McDonald for over three decades, is facing breast cancer while simultaneously battling Bushtucker trials – a juxtaposition that has captivated and concerned viewers.
A legacy on the cobbles and beyond
Callard's career is deeply intertwined with British television. Her portrayal of Liz McDonald, a character who became a cornerstone of Coronation Street, spanned from 1989 until 2019. Beyond the cobbles, she’s graced screens in shows like Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and, more recently, the Irish soap Fair City.

Jungle memories and a renewed spirit
The actress previously appeared on the UK-based edition of I’m A Celebrity… during the pandemic-era filming in Wales. “I loved it all,” she recalled, noting the unusual freedom of disconnecting from her phone and the everyday routines. This time around, viewers are eager to see how she tackles the challenges, knowing the strength she’s drawing upon.

Navigating diagnosis with grace and transparency
What makes Callard’s return particularly poignant is her open and honest sharing of her health journey. Diagnosed with breast cancer in February, she has been documenting her experiences on Instagram, offering a glimpse into her treatment and maintaining a remarkably positive outlook. She clarified that the current series was filmed prior to her diagnosis, a detail that has eased some initial concerns.
“You know when your heart is in your mouth?” she wrote recently, reflecting on the initial shock of the diagnosis. Surgery to remove two lymph nodes has been completed, and she’s awaiting results, expressing hope for a full recovery. She has shared her hopes for radiotherapy following a clean bill of health, demonstrating a resilient determination.
A husband's unwavering support
Jon McEwan, Callard's husband since 2010, is a constant source of support. The drummer and recording studio owner affectionately nicknamed “megashag” by Callard, has been praised for his devotion. “Jon’s painting the bedroom in our new home… if I am tired,” she shared, acknowledging his thoughtful gestures. “I really feel for anyone who is going through it by themselves.”
Their meeting in Spain, she recalls, was an instant connection: “Within minutes we were chatting away.” It's a testament to their bond that McEwan’s support is so visibly present, a comforting anchor amidst the trials of both the jungle and her health battle.
