Taskmaster's 21st series: can a nipple tassel win?

Forget your carefully crafted spreadsheets and strategic planning; Channel 4’s Taskmaster is back for its 21st series, promising a fresh dose of chaotic brilliance. Five new contestants will attempt the bizarre and brilliant challenges set by Greg Davies and Alex Horne, all in pursuit of the coveted golden head trophy. The question isn't just who will compete, but whether a knack for bizarre improvisation—or perhaps a mastery of chicken-egg nipple tassel construction—is the key to victory.

This year’s lineup is a delightful blend of comedy veterans and rising stars. Joining the fray are comedian and actor Amy Gledhill (known for her delightfully silly duo, The Delightful Sausage), Joel Dommett, who demonstrated surprising resilience (and a talent for covert jungle missions) on I’m a Celebrity., the ever-charming Joanna Page (forever etched in our hearts as Gavin & Stacey's Stacey Shipman), satirist Armando Iannucci (the brains behind The Thick of It and Veep), and Kumail Nanjiani (a man who's literally played a superhero in Eternals).

Dommett, fresh off his runner-up finish on I’m a Celeb, might just have the edge. Taskmaster is, after all, a test of endurance, ingenuity, and a certain willingness to embrace the absurd—qualities he clearly possesses. But don't count out Page, whose experience presenting shows like Shop Well for Less suggests a sharp mind capable of assessing a situation and devising a clever solution. Her ability to think on her feet is no joke.

Gledhill's background in sketch comedy and the sheer audacity of her Fringe Festival duo's name hints at a playful unpredictability that could prove surprisingly effective. Iannucci, unsurprisingly, has described the Taskmaster process as “a breeze” compared to his previous projects—a statement that might just prove to be a bold overestimation. And Nanjiani? Well, if anyone can channel superheroic energy into building the tallest tower out of marshmallows, it's probably him.

The stakes are high, the challenges are ludicrous, and the potential for comedic gold is astronomical.

Taskmaster series 21 premieres on Channel 4 on Thursday, April 9th. For those of us outside the UK, the official Taskmaster YouTube channel will offer a window into the madness shortly thereafter.
