Prada's style secrets: costume designer unveils the spectacle behind the sequel
Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt are poised to deliver a Fashion frenzy when The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters next month, but the film’s stunning wardrobe was meticulously crafted by costume designer Molly Rogers – and she’s pulling back the curtain on the process.
A runway revival with a twist
Rogers, who honed her skills assisting Patricia Field on the original film's iconic outfits, brought a historical perspective to the sequel, aiming to build upon the energetic spirit of the first while injecting a fresh, unexpected element. “The DNA of the first film is so strong,” she explained, “I wanted to give it my perspective.”
From Miranda Priestley’s commanding silhouettes – “a powerful woman would have a very strong silhouette” – to Emily Charlton’s sharp, contemporary looks at a major Fashion house, each character’s wardrobe was carefully curated. Interestingly, the infamous Valentino Rockstud shoes sported by Miranda in the teaser? Were a conscious design choice, despite Rogers’ initial reservations.

Designer’s vision: a budget beyond the first film
Working with a significantly expanded budget allowed Rogers and her team to explore a wider range of designers and styles, resulting in several glamorous looks that ultimately didn’t make the final cut – including a bespoke Dior ensemble by Jonathan Anderson. “There were so many designers and looks to choose from,” Rogers noted, “many glamorous looks did not end up making the final cut.”
But the collaboration with the cast was paramount. “If an actor is collaborative, and no one feels afraid to offer an idea, you make a better outfit and you make a better movie,” Rogers emphasized. Even Meryl Streep requested a personal keepsake from the set, though what that item was remains a mystery. The film’s meticulous attention to detail – and the sheer creative energy – promises a visual feast for Fashion lovers.
