Jaafar jackson channels uncle michael: a two-year immersion

Stepping into the shoes – and the iconic sequined jackets – of Michael Jackson is a daunting task for any performer. But for Jaafar Jackson, the endeavor carries a deeply personal weight. The 29-year-old, son of Jermaine Jackson and nephew to the King of Pop, is set to portray his uncle in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming movie-musical, Michael, a role he’s meticulously prepared for over two years.

A legacy of research and reflection

Jackson’s path to embodying Michael Jackson wasn’t simply about mimicking dance moves or vocal inflections; it was about understanding the man behind the global phenomenon. The physical demands were considerable, but equally significant was the emotional connection forged through the meticulous replication of Jackson’s signature style.

Beyond the choreography, the film's costumes, brought to life by costume designer Marci Rodgers, played a vital role in Jackson’s immersion. “That was such a fun process,” he admits, recounting the experience of trying on iconic outfits like the Thriller look and the Motown 25 “Billie Jean” ensemble. The clothing, he says, helped him grasp the specificity and detail with which Michael approached his stage persona.

The press tour accompanying Michael has been a fashion journey in itself. Working with stylist Ilaria Urbinati, Jackson has crafted looks that are both contemporary and respectful of his uncle’s style. “It's been such a fun process, especially since it’s my first time experiencing this,
